Green Hollow Clout

The club’s main annual open meeting is the Green Hollow Clout, run by the club every July as part of the British Longbow Society’s annual Calendar of Events. This meeting is notable for the obscene amount of food that is devoured at lunch and afternoon tea, all lovingly prepared by the club’s ladies (and even, occasionally in parts, by its gentlemen or at least by their better halves. Or their hens.).

In the open event, ladies and gentlemen compete for the James Graham Arrows, named after the 1st Marquis of Montrose a.k.a. the Great Marquis. Said by some to have been born at Mugdock Castle, Graham played a prominent rôle on the Royalist side in Scottish fixtures during the Great Civil War. We commemorate him not only because of the local connection, but also because he was the last British general to deploy longbowmen to decisive effect in battle. Indeed, he was no mean archer himself, twice winning the famous Silver Arrow while he was a student at St Andrews University (he also accidentally shot the Dean of the University once while mucking about with his pals, but we won’t go into that...)

The meeting also serves as the club members’ own annual Clout Championships in which we compete for the club’s clout trophies – the Mugdock Arrows for ladies and gentlemen and the Mugdock Silver Plate for the juniors.
